Survivors with memories: the filmed story of No Return
April 24th marks a double event: the re-release in theaters of *Sans retour possible* (1983), a film co-directed by Serge Avédikian and Jacques Kébadian, and the publication of *Un mur contre l'oubli* (A Wall Against Oblivion), a book conceived by the latter based on this film. On this occasion, Serge Avédikian reflects on a cinematic gesture born from the need to transmit and remember, whose scope and resonance continue to this day.

At the heart of *Sans retour possible* lies a imperative: to capture a voice threatened with extinction. In the early 1980s, the generation of survivors of the Armenian Genocide was gradually passing away. “If we don’t do it now, it will be too late; we will no longer be able to grasp these voices. There was, in particular, a sense of urgency,” recalls Serge Avédikian. With Jacques Kébadian, he then embarked on a research project across France, traveling to major cities with a significant Armenian diaspora, from Marseille to Lyon, from Valence to the Paris region, to gradually identify witnesses.
This initial research also resulted in a collection of material far broader than the film itself: while not all testimonies could be included in the final cut, they were preserved, archived, and deposited, notably for research purposes. The project quickly transcended the scope of an audiovisual work to become a true act of remembrance.
The film was created with limited resources, supported by networks of friends and borrowed equipment, guided above all by a strong formal rigor. The choice of 16mm film was essential to fully assert its cinematic dimension. With a fixed camera, a deliberate length, and the words left untouched, the approach aimed to convey, without artifice, the density of the stories. “It wasn’t a news report, but a creative documentary. A documentary conceived and conceived…”
A documentary that was conceived and constructed,” explains Avédikian.
Un documentaire pensé et construit ”, précise Avédikian.
The editing process therefore focused on avoiding any redundancy, while respecting the uniqueness of each individual's journey.
The goal was to create a dialogue between voices and a sense of continuity without homogenization.
The title itself carries historical weight.

Intended for future generations, it speaks to those who did not experience the event firsthand but bear its legacy.
A certain distance has gradually emerged between the survivors and their descendants.

This disconnect was particularly evident during the film's television broadcast.

As Avédikian analyzes today, “if the film provoked such reactions, it’s because it touched on something very profound, something they themselves struggled to express or accept.”
By rejecting any idealization, the work brings to light a reality that some would have preferred to keep hidden.

The disappearance of direct witnesses is now a given, and the film appears as one of the rare spaces where their voices survive in their most immediate form.

Conceived by Jacques Kébadian using images from the film, the book presents the survivors' testimonies in the form of subtitled stills.
Isolated from the narrative flow, these images acquire a new autonomy: the viewer becomes a reader, free to set their own pace, able to linger on a detail, a glance, an expression.
Furthermore, these images are accompanied by texts written by historians, researchers, writers, and film specialists, most of whom belong to the generation of survivors' descendants.
