Armineh Johannes, living memory of Armenia

Armineh Johannes, mémoire vive de l'Arménie

For over thirty years, this photographer has documented the daily lives of the Armenian people, from the Nagorno-Karabakh War to political upheavals. Her new book, We Are Our Mountains (1), recently published, is a vibrant and intimate archive of this nation.

We discover Armineh Johannes's journey in 1989, a year after the earthquake that devastated Armenia. Born in Tehran and living in France, she travels to the land of her ancestors for the first time. The trip begins in the Spitak cemetery, on the first anniversary of the disaster. “It was an extremely moving experience for me,” she confides. This encounter with Armenia creates such a profound connection that upon her return to Paris, “it took me several months to readjust to life in France.” Her approach is documentary from the outset. We follow her as she forges bonds with the inhabitants, spending time with those she photographs. In 1990s Armenia, newly emerged from the Soviet era, the welcome was extraordinary. “People, always curious and intrigued, wanted to get to know me. They asked questions about my life in France, whether I was married, how much I earned,” she recalls. Armenian hospitality made her work easier, particularly in rural areas where building friendships proved “very easy, genuine, and pleasant.”

We accompanied her in the field with her driver and guide, a man she met during her first trips and who still accompanies her today. Together, they traveled through towns, villages, and hamlets. In remote regions, the inhabitants welcomed them into their homes with unparalleled generosity. “We could tell they didn’t have much to offer or put on the table, and yet, they went out of their way to welcome us,” she says.

Unlike in many other countries, the experience of photography in Armenia, especially in the 1990s, proved very pleasant.

People readily agreed to be photographed, some even doing so of their own volition.
