Turkey votes for Pashinyan

La Turquie vote Pachinian

Ankara authorizes the resumption of direct trade with Armenia, less than a month before the Armenian parliamentary elections.

BY VAROUJAN MARDIKIAN Turkey announced on May 13 the lifting of its embargo on imports from Armenia.

“As part of the confidence-building measures taken within the framework of our normalization process with Armenia, which has been underway since 2022, the administrative preparations necessary for the resumption of direct trade between Turkey and Armenia were finalized on Monday, May 11, 2026,” said Önçü Keçeli, spokesperson for the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who emphasized that “the technical and administrative work necessary for the opening of the shared border between the two countries is still ongoing.”

He added: “Thanks to the new regulations, it is now possible to designate Turkey or Armenia as the final destination or point of origin for goods transported from Turkey to Armenia via a third country, and vice versa.”

The Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed this decision, considering the opening of the border and the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two states to be the “logical next step.”

However, optimism was not high on the Armenian side, which accused Turkey of dragging its feet.

After Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan refused to attend the Antalya Diplomatic Forum (April 17-19), the Speaker of the Armenian Parliament, Alen Simonyan, complained on April 19 in Istanbul, during the Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly, that Turkey was reluctant to complete the process of normalizing bilateral relations.

“Armenia is ready to open the [Turkish-Armenian] border, but Turkey is not taking any steps forward.

Initially, they said the border would not open until the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict was resolved.

In their respective reports, the Armenian and Turkish foreign ministries emphasized “the importance of the rapid reopening of the Kars-Gyumri line for strengthening regional transport communications.”

According to the US Embassy in Yerevan, the meeting aimed to “establish a joint working group” for the rehabilitation of this railway line, which has been closed since 1993 as part of the blockade imposed by Turkey on Armenia.
