The KOHAR Library, a living memory of Armenian music

On the fifth floor of a building on Armenia Street in Beirut lies one of the most unique collections in the entire Armenian world: the KOHAR Library. Founded in 2012 by the Khatchadourian family, it now houses more than 2,500 songbooks, 500 dictionaries, and 3,600 audio and audiovisual materials, representing a musical and linguistic heritage unparalleled within the Armenian Diaspora. Garo Derounian, the library's director and a passionate collector of rare books, discussed the history, mission, and challenges of this institution, as little known as it is essential to the preservation of Western Armenian and Armenian musical culture.

In the Mar Mikhael district, a stone's throw from Bourj Hammoud, the largest flag in Lebanon can be seen flying atop a glass building. This is where the Khatchadourian family, Armenian-Lebanese patriots, keep alive one of the jewels of Armenian culture in the Land of the Cedars.

A family vocation that has become an institution

Une vocation familiale devenue institution

“The KOHAR library was founded by the Khatchadourian family in Beirut in 2012,” recalls Garo Derounian. With a smiling face and a gentle voice, our friend is a great enthusiast of rare books. On his Facebook page, he never misses an opportunity to share his discoveries. “Our library was born from the desire to preserve, in one place, the family collection of Armenian musical documents and to make it accessible to the public.” What could have remained a private project quickly transformed into a large-scale heritage undertaking: “Their vision was to create a place where Armenian music and heritage could be protected, studied, and passed on to future generations, a cultural institution dedicated to promoting knowledge, supporting research, and strengthening the connection with Armenian music, history, language, and identity.”
