Kremlin calls plans to deploy nuclear weapons in Lithuania an "escalation step"

“A military base is part of the military infrastructure. And if the military infrastructure of someone, in particular, a leading NATO state, approaches our borders, then, of course, this cannot be perceived otherwise than as a step towards escalation, as well as the deployment of nuclear weapons on the territory of a neighboring state,” said Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian president, answering the question of how the Kremlin assesses the process of discussing the issue of lifting the ban on the deployment of nuclear weapons in Lithuania and the discussion of the United States’ proposal to create a permanent American military base in Lithuania.

He noted that all this “will not contribute to the stability and predictability of the situation on the European continent, but, on the contrary, will lead to another significant stage of escalation of tensions.”

On October 6, the Lithuanian Seimas, by a double vote, approved an amendment to the Constitution, which envisages the abolition of the provision prohibiting the deployment of weapons of mass destruction and military bases of foreign states on the territory of Lithuania. The final vote on the constitutional amendment will take place on January 12 of next year.

The Lithuanian Ministry of Defense stated that “the amendment to the Constitution is conditioned by the fact that Lithuania should have the opportunity to use the full potential of NATO deterrence, NATO nuclear weapons are the most effective means of deterrence, and NATO’s nuclear shield is the basis of that deterrence.”

For its part, the US presidential administration indicated that it would consider Lithuania’s proposal to deploy its military base in Lithuania.
