“TorontoHay” – How did the Hamazkayin Armenian Studies Library come about?

«Թորոնթոհայ»– Ինչպէ՞ս ծնունդ առաւ Համազգայինի հայագիտական նիւթերու լսարանը:

Tamar Donabedian Guzuian – The idea is not new. An Armenian Studies Library existed in Toronto for several years, under the leadership of Mr. Margar Sharapkhanian and Ms. Sona Hovhannesian.

Թամար Տօնապետեան Գուզուեան– Միտքը նոր չէ։ Հայագիտական նիւթերու լսարան մը ատենին գոյութիւն ունէր Թորոնթոյի մէջ, որ քանի մը տարի շարունակուեցաւ պրն. Մարգար Շարապխանեանի եւ տիկ. Սոնա Յովհաննէսեանի ղեկավարութեամբ։

Hamazkayin, as an educational and cultural association, aims to keep the language alive, spread literature, and stimulate creativity through various programs. Shortly after its foundation, Hamazkayin laid the foundation for the Armenian Seminary and immediately began publishing. Over the years, it expanded its educational activities. It founded the highest institution of Armenian studies of Hamazkayin in Beirut, which produced about 150 graduates between 1974 and 2003. Today, Hamazkayin has more than one seminary in Lebanon, France, and Australia. It runs an Armenian teacher training program in collaboration with Yerevan State University and Haigazian University of Beirut and continues to produce graduates who teach Armenian in the Middle East and Europe. The Aleppo Institute of Armenology of Hamazkayin, founded in 1996, continues to bear fruit. Let us add: the “Vahe Setian” publishing house-printing house, the “Bagin” literary and artistic periodical and the “Bagin” series of books, the Hamazkayin textbook publishing program, Lalan and Aran, in the case of Canada, the “Oshakan” series of books, the series of collections of the Book Lovers Group of the “Gladzor” chapter of Toronto. These are examples of ongoing programs, each of which has made a tangible contribution to the benefit of Armenian education.

Համազգայինը իբր կրթական եւ մշակութային միութիւն զանազան ծրագիրներու ընդմէջէն կը միտի լեզուն կենսունակ պահել, գրականութիւն տարածել, ստեղծագործութեան զարկ տալ։ Իր հիմնադրութենէն քիչ անց Համազգայինը հիմը դրաւ Հայ ճեմարանին եւ անմիջապէս ձեռնարկեց հրատարակչական աշխատանքի։ Տարիներու ընթացքին ընդարձակեց իր կրթական գործունէութիւնը։ Պէյրութի մէջ հիմնեց Համազգայինի Հայագիտական բարձրագոյն հիմնարկը որ 1974-2003 տարիներուն մօտ 150 շրջանաւարտ տուաւ։ Այսօր Համազգայինը ունի մէկէ աւելի ճեմարաններ Լիբանանի, Ֆրանսայի եւ Աւստրալիոյ մէջ։ Կը վարէ հայերէնի ուսուցիչներու պատրաստութեան ծրագիր Երեւանի պետական համալսարանի եւ Պէյրութի Հայկազեան համալսարանի գործակցութեամբ եւ կը շարունակէ տալ իր հունձքը. շրջանաւարտներ, որոնք հայերէն կը դասաւանդեն Միջին Արեւելքի եւ Եւրոպայի մէջ։ 1996-ին հիմնադրուած Համազգայինի Հալէպի հայագիտական հիմնարկը կը շարունակէ տալ իր պտուղները։ Աւելցնենք. «Վահէ Սէթեան» հրատարակչատուն-տպարանը, «Բագին» գրական գեղարուեստական պարբերաթերթն ու «Բագին» մատենաշարը, Համազգայինի դասագիրքերու հրատարակութեան ծրագիրը, Լալան ու Արան, Գանատայի պարագային՝ «Օշական» մատենաշարը, Թորոնթոյի «Գլաձոր» մասնաճիւղի Գրասէրներու խմբակի հաւաքներու շարքը. ասոնք օրինակներ են շարունակական ծրագիրներու, իրաքանչիւրը իր կարգին շօշափելի ներդրում ունի ի նպաստ հայեցի կրթութեան։

Since the establishment of the “Levon Shant” Armenian Studies Course in Montreal under the auspices of the Hamazkayin Canadian Regional Executive, there has been a desire to launch a similar program in Toronto as well. By then, in 2025, at the initiative of the Canadian regional administration, that step was taken. And as the saying goes, “Where there is a will, there is also a possibility.” A three-member advisory body emerged, which also included Meghedi Etiemezian and Simon Haserjian, and we got to work. Here we are approaching the launch.

Համազգայինի Գանատայի շրջանային վարչութեան հովանաւորութեամբ՝ Մոնթրէալի մէջ «Լեւոն Շանթ» հայերէնագիտական դասընթացքի հիմնադրութենէն ի վեր, Թորոնթոյի մէջ եւս նման ծրագիր մը սկսելու փափաք կայ։ Առ այդ, 2025-ին Գանատայի շրջանային վարչութեան նախաձեռնութեամբ այդ քայլը առնուեցաւ։ Եւ ինչպէս կ՚ըսէ առածը՝ «Երբ կայ կամքը, կ՚ըլլայ նաեւ կարելիութիւնը»։ Եռանդամ խորհրդատու մարմին մը յառաջացաւ, որուն մաս կազմեցին նաեւ Մեղեդի Էթիեմեզեանն ու Սիմոն Հասըրճեանը եւ գործի անցանք։ Ահաւասիկ կը մօտենանք մեկնարկին։

“Toronto Armenian” – Why an Armenian Studies Classroom in Toronto

«Թորոնթոհայ»– Ինչո՞ւ հայագիտական նիւթերու լսարան Թորոնթոյի մէջ

Tamar – Toronto has been and is a vibrant community. And one of the incentives to keep a community vibrant is the development of new initiatives. Initiatives that keep pace with the conditions of the day and the needs of the community. We have a community that is growing day by day. Today’s youth will become tomorrow’s parents, teachers, and union activists. Schools transmit the language within their capabilities. The “Y. Manoukian” library of Hamazkayin, literary events, the work of other associations and churches in the community help to give impetus to the Armenian language. But it must be admitted that there is a gap, therefore more must be given to develop the cultural knowledge base, to keep the language, literature, and culture alive, and to prepare the people of tomorrow.

Թամար– Թորոնթօն աշխուժ համայնք եղած է եւ է։ Եւ համայնք մը աշխուժ պահելու խթաններէն մէկը նոր ձեռնարկներու յառաջացումն է. ձեռնարկներ որ քայլ պահեն օրուան պայմաններուն եւ համայնքի կարիքներուն հետ։ Համայնք մը ունինք որ օր ըստ օրէ կ՚աճի. այսօրուան երիտասարդը պիտի դառնայ վաղուան ծնողը, ուսուցիչը, միութենական գործիչը։ Դպրոցները իրենց կարելիութեան սահմաններուն մէջ կը փոխանցեն լեզուն. Համազգայինի «Յ. Մանուկեան» գրադարանը, գրական ձեռնարկները, համայնքին մէջ այլ միութիւններու, եկեղեցիներուն կատարած աշխատանքները կ՚օգնեն հայերէնախօսութեան զարկ տալու։ Բայց պէտք է ընդունիլ որ բաց մը գոյութիւն ունի, հետեւաբար աւելին պէտք է տալ մշակութային գիտելիքի պաշարը զարգացնելու, լեզուն, գրականութիւնը, մշակոյթը ապրեցնելու եւ վաղուան մարդուժը պատրաստելու։

“Toronto Armenian” – What is the nature of the course?

«Թորոնթոհայ»– Ինչպիսի՞ բնոյթ ունի լսարանը

Tamar – The course lasts two years, after which the student receives a certificate. Four trimesters in two years: September to December, January to May. One tutor per week. The tutor also has a workshop section, which is planned according to the subject. The subjects are mainly focused on language and literature. There are also other subjects related to Armenian culture. All of this, personally, in a classroom environment, where the student has the opportunity not only to listen but also to express himself, discuss, and develop oral and written skills.

Թամար– Լսարանը երկու տարուան տեւողութիւն ունի, որմէ ետք ուսանողը կը ստանայ վկայագիր։ Երկու տարուան մէջ չորս եռամսեակ՝ սեպտեմբերէն դեկտեմբեր, յունուարէն մայիս։ Շաբթուան մէջ մէկ դասապահ։ Դասապահը նաեւ ունի աշխատանոցի բաժին, որ նիւթին համաձայն կը ծրագրուի։ Նիւթերը առաւելաբար կեդրոնացած են լեզուի եւ գրականութեան վրայ. կան նաեւ հայկական մշակոյթին առնչուող այլ նիւթեր։ Այս բոլորը՝ անձամբ, դասարանային միջավայրի մէջ, ուր ուսանողը առիթ կ՚ունենայ ոչ միայն ունկնդրելու այլեւ արտայայտուելու, քննարկելու, բանաւոր եւ գրաւոր կարողութիւնները զարգացնելու։

“Toronto Armenian” – What should be understood by saying language, literature, and cultural subjects?

«Թորոնթոհայ»– Լեզու, գրականութիւն եւ մշակութային նիւթեր ըսելով ի՞նչ պէտք է հասկնալ:

Tamar – In the case of language, the emphasis is on Western Armenian. Subjects such as spelling and grammar will be part of the program. The course of literature, its fields, publishing work, the history of the Armenian church, post-genocide literature, Armenian poetry, the art of editing, and other subjects will be conveyed to the student as much as the format of the classroom allows. Of course, when we talk about all of this, we will naturally also touch on different periods of Armenian history. All of these are inevitably interconnected.

Թամար– Լեզուի պարագային շեշտը արեւմտահայերէնի վրայ է. նիւթեր ինչպէս ուղղագրութիւն, քերականութիւն մաս պիտի կազմեն ծրագրին։ Գրականութեան հոլովոյթը, ոլորտները, հրատարակչական աշխատանքը, հայ եկեղեցւոյ պատմութիւնը, յետ-եղեռնեան գրականութիւնը, հայ բանաստեղծութիւնը, խմբագրութեան արուեստը եւ այլ նիւթեր պիտի փոխանցուին ուսանողին այնքան որքան կը թոյլատրէ լսարանին ձեւաչափը։ Ի հարկէ երբ կը խօսինք այս բոլորին մասին բնականաբար հայոց պատմութեան տարբեր ժամանակահատուածներու մասին ալ պիտի անդրադառնանք։ Անխուսափելիօրէն իրարու կապուած են այս բոլորը։

“Torontohai” – What kind of lecturers are in mind?

«Թորոնթոհայ»– Ինչպիսի՞ դասախօսներ նկատի առնուած են:

Tamar – Each subject has its own lecturer. Individuals who, with their expertise and knowledge base, will undoubtedly enrich the student’s experience.

Թամար– Իւրաքանչիւր նիւթ ունի իր դասախօսը. անհատներ որոնք իրենց մասնագիտութեամբ եւ գիտելիքներու պաշարով անկասկած պիտի հարստացնեն ուսանողին փորձառութիւնը։

The lecturers for the first semester come mostly from Toronto and Montreal. They are individuals who have left their mark in the literary and educational fields. Spiritual fathers will also be part of the team. During the course of the course, we will also have lecturers from the United States of America or other countries from time to time. It must be said that everyone responded enthusiastically to our offer. Thanks in advance to everyone.

Առաջին տարեշրջանի դասախօսները առաւելաբար կու գան Թորոնթոյէն եւ Մոնթրէալէն. գրական եւ կրթական մարզերուն մէջ իրենց դրոշմը ձգած անհատներ են։ Կազմին մաս պիտի կազմեն նաեւ հոգեւոր հայրեր։ Լսարանի ընթացքին, պարբերաբար դասախօսներ պիտի ունենանք նաեւ Ամերիկայի Միացեալ Նահանգներէն կամ այլ երկիրներէ։ Պէտք է ըսել որ բոլորը խանդավառութեամբ ընդառաջեցին մեր առաջարկին։ Կանխայայտ շնորհակալութիւն բոլորին։

“Torontohai” – What are the conditions for participation? What can the student expect?

«Թորոնթոհայ»– Մասնակցութեան պայմանները ի՞նչ են. ի՞նչ կրնայ ակնկալել ուսանողը:

Tamar – The participant must have knowledge of Armenian. Also, at least a high school diploma is required.

Թամար– Մասնակցողը պէտք է հայերէնի իմացութիւն ունենայ. նաեւ, առնուազն երկրորդական ուսումը աւարտած պէտք է ըլլայ։

Anyone who wishes to develop their knowledge of Western Armenian language, literature, and culture and believes they can benefit from such a course, whether they are a teacher, union member, parent, or university student, may participate. To receive a certificate, the student must have completed the course (four semesters) and attended at least 80 percent of the lectures.

Այն անձը որ կը փափաքի զարգացնել արեւմտահայերէնի, գրականութեան, մշակոյթի իմացութիւնը եւ կը հաւատայ որ կրնայ օգուտ քաղել նման լսարանէ, ըլլայ ան ուսուցիչ, միութենական, ծնող, թէ համալսարանական, կրնայ մասնակցիլ։ Վկայագիր ստանալու համար, ուսանողը պարտի ամբողջացուցած ըլլալ լսարանի ընթացքը (չորս եռամսեակ) եւ մասնակցած դասապահերու առնուազն 80 առ հարիւրին։

As with any course or course, student participation is important. In this case, at the end of each semester, the student must give a presentation on a topic of their choice based on the semester’s material.

Ինչպէս որեւէ լսարան կամ դասընթացք, ուսանողին մասնակցութիւնը կարեւոր է. այս պարագային, իւրաքանչիւր եռամսեակի աւարտին, ուսանողը պէտք է կատարէ ներկայացում, որուն նիւթը ինք կ՚ընտրէ, եռամսեակի նիւթերուն հիման վրայ։

“Toronto Armenian” – When does the lecture begin, how can I participate?

«Թորոնթոհայ»– Ե՞րբ կը սկսի լսարանը, ինչպէ՞ս կարելի է մասնակցիլ

Tamar – The lecture begins on Monday, September 14. We are glad that this step has created great interest in the community. We have received 25 applications. Some of the applicants are young people. There are also teachers and union members.

Թամար– Լսարանը կը սկսի Երկուշաբթի, 14 սեպտեմբերին։ Ուրախ ենք որ համայնքին մէջ մեծ հետաքրքրութիւն ստեղծեց այս քայլը։ Ստացած ենք 25 դիմումնագիր. դիմողներուն մէկ մասը երիտասարդներէ բաղկացած է. կան նաեւ ուսուցիչներ եւ միութենականներ։
