Does Armenia need a national multiplication table?

For many decades, there was no "man from Moscow" in the top leadership of Soviet Armenia.

But then he appeared—and could it be said that everything around him began to crumble and collapse?

This is the question our columnist, Sergei Bablumyan, attempts to answer.

Does Armenia need a national multiplication table?

Of all the top leaders of Soviet Armenia, Pavel Petrovich Anisimov was the first Russian.

How did it all come about?

In 1973, the idea of removing the First Secretary of the Central Committee, Anton Yervandovich Kochinyan, popularly known as "Anton Brilliantovich," arose within the republic's leadership and nearly became reality.

The then-unthinkable coup was led by the second-in-command in Armenia's party leadership, Georgiy Artashesovich Ter-Gazaryants, an experienced, decisive, and intelligent politician.

Nevertheless, the "mutiny on the ship" failed: Ter-Gazaryants was sent as ambassador to Senegal, Africa, the remaining Carbonari were demoted and scattered, and that was the end of it.

But then things began to change.

To prevent a relapse, a man from Moscow was sent as the Second Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Armenia for the first time—that same

Anisimov, who held the high post of Deputy Head of the Department of Organizational and Party Work, a key structural unit of the Central Committee of the CPSU, which oversaw issues of party building, internal party structure, and personnel placement (in the Union republics, similar units operated within the Central Committees of the republican communist parties).

In those tragic days, the expression "the Russians are coming" took on special meaning.

Russians arrived in Armenia in countless numbers to save, help, and support.

There were days when not a single minister, head of a major department, or organization remained in Moscow, not to mention Nikolai Ryzhkov, Chairman of the USSR Council of Ministers, to whom, despite the ban then in effect, a monument was erected in Spitak while he was still alive.

But then the Russians left, and labor detachments from other Soviet republics began to leave Armenia with them, and the transformation of the disaster zone into a habitable territory dragged on for decades—with no end in sight.

An important nuance: Yes, it wasn't only Russia that helped Armenia—the entire world, one might say, lent a helping hand.

But it's hard to deny: the aid came not only out of respect for an ancient and wise people or for the beautiful Armenian eyes, but also because the republic was part of the Soviet Union, with which the West was trying to establish relations at the time.

And who doesn't know that the cornerstone of that great country was, after all, not Armenia, but Russia?

I'll name a few names from memory that are definitely not Armenian: Korotkov, Sochinsky, Piskunov (ministers), Pyatkova and the same Anisimov (party bosses), as well as Alekseevsky, director of the legendary branch of VNIIKE (All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Integrated Electrical Equipment), from which dozens of highly qualified employees eventually ascended to leadership positions.

Anyone can recall and add, but you still won't find many Russians.

In their everyday lives, they studied, worked, got married, and became engaged before our very eyes.

It was believed that children born of mixed marriages were prettier and smarter—and in fact, that was true.

In short, there was no hint of Russophobia in the republic.

And it's not that there were virtually no Slavs in Armenia, but that for us Armenians of that time, it made no difference who was around: Georgian, Tajik, Estonian, or Indian.

It turned out that everything necessary, long-awaited, and significant in Armenia came about with Russian help: the metro, the nuclear power plant, the Arpa-Sevan underground canal.

And the best masters of their craft—scientific, industrial, literary, theatrical, medical—mostly studied at Russian universities, worked in Russia, and then moved to Armenia to live and continue their work.

Why, and why, should we not forget this?

Because today, when the old world order is crumbling and the new one is still in the process of being formed, Russia is closer and more understandable to Armenians than all the countries of the European Union combined, or any of them individually.

No matter how sophisticated the Russophobes of our time may be, consider this reality parallel or perpendicular, call it what you will, but it is true!

This didn't stop Armenians from living in friendship and harmony with Tajiks, Indians, or Georgians.

Meanwhile, the notion of their own exceptionalism isn't new to some of our compatriots.

Back in his student years, there was a perfectly normal, yet somewhat odd, student in our class.

Reflecting on the special place of Armenians in the world, this classmate considered a national multiplication table and also wanted to ban the showing of foreign films dubbed into Russian in Armenia.

The fact that Artem Karapetyan dubbed the main characters in most foreign films (Louis de Funes, Alberto Sordi, Jean Marais, Gérard Philipe, and others) didn't solve anything—Esmeralda from "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" was obliged to speak Armenian and nothing else!

The initiative to reform the multiplication table is more of a curiosity, but already in the 1980s, there was talk that, by exporting copper, gold, and molybdenum from Armenia, Moscow was underfeeding it, even though few Soviet countries could compare to Yerevan in terms of food supplies.

What was it about Russians that appealed to Armenians?

According to the legendary athlete and multiple world and European pentathlon champion Igor Novikov, expressed to me many years ago: "Russians don't hold grudges; they know how to make friends and get along easily with all kinds of people.

A true Russian has an open soul, and it's always pure and bright, even when life is chaotic."

"This is how we differ from the Germans and the English, who may be clean and tidy on the outside, but deep down in their souls there are too often dark pools and disorder," explained Igor Novikov, who called himself a Russian son of the Armenian people.

"And also," he continued, "I've heard complaints from residents of Alma-Ata, where many Russians have left, that there are far fewer beautiful faces on the streets than twenty years ago.

True, the people of Yerevan have no reason to complain about this yet.

That's already good!"
