The UN Deputy Spokesperson stated that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has visited Pakistan and announced that Guterres is scheduled to discuss diplomatic efforts and mediation between Tehran and Washington, as well as the ways forward, with Pakistani officials during this visit.

According to IRNA, UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Aziz Haq told reporters yesterday at New York time: The UN Secretary-General has left New York for Pakistan. The trip was planned in advance and he is expected to arrive in Pakistan on Tuesday morning.

The UN spokesperson said: The Secretary-General will meet and talk with senior government officials in Islamabad, including Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, as well as Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar, as well as Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari.

Haq added: “This visit will also be an opportunity for the Secretary-General to discuss Pakistan’s diplomatic and mediation efforts between the United States and Iran, including Pakistan’s constructive role in supporting the negotiations between the two countries.”

The UN spokesperson continued: “The UN Secretary-General wants to be informed of the latest status of the mediation efforts during this visit and discuss the way forward in this regard.”

He added: “Obviously, he has been in contact with all the countries involved in these mediations. As you know, he has also been in contact with the Egyptian and Qatari authorities and will continue to do so.”

Regarding the conflict in Yemen, the UN spokesperson also said: “You have seen the concerns that we have raised with the Secretary-General in recent weeks about the escalation of violence in Yemen. The Secretary-General has called for a reduction in tensions by both sides and continues to do so.” He believes that further militarization, including the involvement of foreign powers, will not help.

“The UN Secretary-General is deeply concerned by the sharp escalation of the conflict, which has intensified significantly in recent days,” Haq said. “He condemns the continued cross-border attacks by the Houthis (Ansar Allah) against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”

The UN Deputy Spokesperson said: “The Secretary-General calls on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and is closely monitoring developments, including their impact on civilians. All parties must fully comply with their obligations under international humanitarian law, including their obligations to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure.”

Haq said: “The UN Secretary-General calls on the parties to continue to engage constructively with the UN Special Envoy to achieve a comprehensive and mutually agreed political solution through negotiations.”
