Turkish figure admits it was a heavy blow for them when Texas recognized the Armenian Genocide

Armenian Americans knew they had won a major victory in recognizing the Armenian Genocide when Texas became the 46th state to recognize the genocide. However, they did not realize that Texas’ recognition had a devastating impact on the lobbying efforts of the Turkish community in that state.
In an article published on Turkishnews.com, Dr. Feruh Demirmen revealed the level of despair that he and his Turkish friends in Texas felt when the state House of Representatives recognized the Armenian Genocide on May 19, 2017. It is not often that we come across a Turkish lobbyist who admits to their crushing defeat by the Armenian community.
Demirmen initially blames his Turkish friends for “years of Turkish indifference and passivity, combined with Armenian aggression and Western prejudices” for the passage of the Armenian Genocide resolution. He also acknowledges the activity of the Armenian National Committee of the Western Region of America, “organizing tours with Armenian activists at city council meetings, visiting state elected officials one by one,” and establishing Armenian National Committee branches “in Dallas, Austin, and Houston.”
The Turkish figure also acknowledges the “support of State Representative Scott Sanford, who is also the spiritual pastor of the Texas Baptist Church,” in the success of the genocide resolution. Having done extensive research for his article, Demirmen recalls that “in April 2016, at an event organized by the Armenian National Committee of Dallas, Representative Sanford was awarded the “Advocate for Justice” award “for his great dedication to raising awareness of the Armenian Genocide.” A letter from Republican Senator Ted Cruz on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide was read during the event, Demirmen writes.
2017 On January 26, 2016, Sanford introduced the Texas House of Representatives resolution HR-191, recognizing the Armenian Genocide. The resolution was first introduced to the Commerce and Interstate Affairs Committee (TIAC), which called for a public hearing on April 24 at the state Capitol in Austin. Demirman laments that the Texas legislator “chose April 24 for the public hearing, a symbolic day for Armenian unfounded allegations, [which] was the first sign that TIAC was pro-Armenian in its views.”
Demirman laments that “the hearings were well coordinated by the Armenian National Committee of the Western District of America and Representative Sanford, and unlike the Armenian side, which had known about the hearings for a long time, the Turkish side learned of the meeting only a few days in advance.” As a result, only six Turks (five from Houston and one from Dallas) attended the hearings, while “a large crowd was present on the Armenian side. Sanford was also present as an ‘observer’ [at TIAC]. Demirmen regrets that only four Turks, including himself, testified before the committee, while 21 Armenians testified. “The Armenian side had five times more opportunities to present its point of view than the Turkish side. Thus, the Armenian side dominated the hearings not only in terms of ‘presence’ but also in the testimony given,” Demirmen admitted. “Among the Armenian side’s witnesses were representatives of the Texas Holocaust and Genocide Commission and the Houston Holocaust Museum,” Demirmen reports. In addition, “hundreds of letters were sent to state legislators. There were more phone calls from the Armenian community.”
The objections of the Turks who testified against the resolution were: 1) “the inappropriate interference of Texas legislators in matters of U.S. foreign policy, 2) the harm the resolution could cause to trade relations between Texas and Turkey, 3) the divisive nature of the resolution, and not only that, 4) the fact that the resolution is considered offensive by the Turkish population of Texas,” Demirmen complained.
None of these objections had any effect on the TIAC members, who unanimously adopted the resolution on April 24. The Texas House of Representatives passed the resolution on May 19, approving it by a vote of 137-13 (with eight absent, five abstentions).
Deeply disappointed, Demirmen presents this result as “an achievement led by the Armenian Cause Committee of the Western District of America, with the support of the Texas House of Representatives. Although the resolution has no legal force, for all practical purposes and the general public it was a declaration that found the Ottoman Turks guilty of a terrible crime.”
Demirmen admits that “the Turkish response to HR-191, at least at the grassroots level, was weak… The Turks cannot compete with the Armenians in their activism on the issue of the ‘genocide’… The Turkish side has only itself to blame for its weakness and inaction.”
The Turkish figure concludes his article by blaming ATA-Houston (the Turkish Association of America) for not making an effort to oppose HR-191. He calls the group “an association founded in 1979 to spend happy hours together, which is not interested in the Armenian issue…”
Although Demirmen blames the Texas Turks for their inaction, there is really only one reason the resolution was passed: because it tells the truth… The state of Texas has finally recognized the historical reality of the Armenian Genocide…
