This is, of course, very positive. But cooperation will be limited to the extent possible, as Armenia's membership in the EAEU to a certain extent limits opportunities for cooperation with the EU, particularly in the area of free trade.

Это, конечно, очень позитивно. Но сотрудничество будет до той степени, которая возможна, потому что членство Армении в ЕАЭС в определенной мере ограничивает возможности сотрудничества с ЕС, особенно, в сфере свободной торговли.

Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine have signed Association Agreements with the EU, while Armenia has only signed an Enhanced Cooperation Agreement. How will relations between Armenia and Georgia change after the signing of this agreement?

Грузия, Молдова и Украина подписали с ЕС соглашения об Ассоциации, а Армения – только соглашение о расширенном сотрудничестве. Как изменятся отношения Армении и Грузии после подписания этого соглашения?

It is extremely important for Georgia that its neighbors maintain close relations with the European Union, and in this regard, Tbilisi welcomes Armenia's continued partnership with the EU. I believe that relations between Armenia and Georgia will deepen after this.

What is the significance of the Framework Agreement, from which the economic component has been excluded?

Whatever was possible was done. But the decision is still beneficial, because the development of democratic institutions will bring Armenia even closer to the European Union. Unfortunately, the agreement lacks provisions on free trade, but there are many important areas that could impact the development of democracy in the country.

Было сделано то, что возможно. Но решение все равно полезное, потому что развитие демократических институтов еще больше приблизит Армению к Евросоюзу. К сожалению, в соглашении отсутствуют положения о свободной торговле, но есть немало важных направлений, которые могут сказаться на развитии демократии в стране.

The Yelk faction in the Armenian parliament initiated a statement calling for Armenia's membership in the EAEU to be frozen. How realistic is Armenia's withdrawal from the EAEU?

I think it's unrealistic, since security issues are more important for Armenia right now. Armenia will maintain military cooperation with Russia until the Karabakh conflict is resolved and the threats are neutralized. A decision to leave the EAEU would certainly irritate Russia, and I don't think Armenia will take such a step.

Думаю, нереален, поскольку сейчас вопросы безопасности для Армении важнее. Армения будет сохранять военное сотрудничество с Россией, пока не урегулирован карабахский конфликт и не нейтрализованы угрозы. Решение выйти из ЕАЭС, безусловно, будет раздражать Россию, и я не думаю, что Армения пойдет на такой шаг.

Do you think Russia might resort to traditional blackmail?

That's true. I think Russia could suspend military support for Armenia, and Armenia could find itself in a less favorable position vis-à-vis Turkey and Azerbaijan. The Karabakh issue is at the core of Russia-Armenia cooperation. Armenia needs Russia's support, which is why it joined the EAEU. As for economic cooperation, it could have been pursued bilaterally, within the framework of a free trade agreement. However, under pressure from Russia, Armenia joined the EAEU and abandoned its association agreement with the EU. In this regard, Armenia is now in a difficult situation, as it cannot abandon the EAEU in favor of the EU.

Так и есть. Думаю, Россия может приостановить военную поддержку Армении, и Армения может оказаться в менее выгодной ситуации перед лицом Турции и Азербайджана. В основе сотрудничества России и Армении лежит Карабахская проблема. Армении нужна поддержка России, для того она и вступила в ЕАЭС. Что касается экономического сотрудничества, то его можно было осуществлять и в двустороннем формате – в рамках договора о свободной торговле. Но под давлением России Армения вступила в ЕАЭС и отказалась от Ассоциации с ЕС. В этом смысле Армения сейчас в сложной ситуации, так как не может отказаться от ЕАЭС в пользу ЕС.
