The secrets of the earth in the art of Alexandra Vassilikian
Secretele pământului în arta Alexandrei Vassilikian
Life, but especially death, inspires the works of artist Alexandra Vassilikian. She carries in her genes the pain of the Armenians, transmitted by her ancestors. Pain that, without wanting to, shaped her life and darkened her creations. Pain that must be experienced and shown to her peers, with the hope that at some point, perhaps, they will understand that violence, war, destruction are not essential for the perpetuation of the human species.
Alexandra Vassilikian (Vasilichian in official documents) is an artist of Armenian origin, born in Bucharest in 1946. Destiny has taken her to many European destinations that have adopted her as a traveling daughter and always eager to assimilate new cultures. From the great metropolis of our country, she moved to Brașov, the city between the mountains, then lived in Portuguese lands, in Paris, London and then in Germany, where she found her perfect studio in the manor of a castle hidden in a Bavarian forest.
Between August 21 and September 14, 2025, artist Alexandra Vassilikian brought the exhibition "From the night of the earth" to Bucharest, with the involvement of the Union of Armenians in Romania and the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant. The exhibition was presented as "a cry-anthem in which the artist tells the story of the power of violence, wars and (sur)living. The artist's creations are made on paper, in mixed media, with natural pigments, ash, animal blood and hunting bullets. It is a form of scenography of trauma and memory, where drawn bodies torn, skinned or suspended between worlds become presences, spirits, echoes of a pain that no longer has words. One can move between the large drawings, the gaze is both inside and outside". ¬ Raluca Ilaria Demetrescu ¬ curator of the exhibition.
