Rumors of plague spreading in Siberia have caused panic; authorities deny outbreak

Rumors of a possible plague outbreak in Russia’s Irkutsk region have sparked panic. The rumors spread after Darya Shipilova, a 28-year-old employee of the regional anti-plague institute, died in hospital.

According to local media, Shipilova broke a test tube containing the plague pathogen, Yersinia pestis, while working in a laboratory on September 25. A few days later, her health deteriorated sharply, and she was hospitalized in Shelekhov Hospital. Treatment was unsuccessful, and she died on October 2.

About 200 people were under medical observation after the incident. Quarantine measures were implemented in a number of local medical facilities, and wearing masks became mandatory at the Shelekhov Aluminum Plant. Residents also saw people in protective gear on the streets.

However, Russia’s Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Rights Protection and Human Well-being, Rospotrebnadzor, has stated that the epidemiological situation in the Irkutsk region is stable.

According to the agency, the deceased woman was diagnosed with “pneumonia of unknown origin,” and further tests of samples taken from the patient did not reveal microorganisms related to her professional activities.

Rospotrebnadzor also reported that no incidents involving pathogenic microorganisms were recorded at the Anti-Plague Institute, and no employee of the institution has sought medical attention for an infectious disease in the past 10 days.

The authorities’ unclear presentation of information in the first hours, however, has further deepened concerns on social networks about a possible outbreak of the plague.
