Artificial Intelligence Won't Become Parajanov: David Yang's Masterclass in Yerevan

On October 2, 2026, a landmark event for the Armenian IT community took place in Yerevan. David Yan, an outstanding technological visionary, pioneer in artificial intelligence, and one of the most prominent representatives of the global Armenian diaspora in the high-tech industry, held a masterclass at the Russian-Armenian University (RAU). The meeting with students was not just a lecture on the future of neural networks, but also a profound conversation about human nature, creativity, and national roots, all of which are inextricably linked to innovation.

David Evgenievich Yan was born on June 3, 1968, in Yerevan to a unique academic family where two ancient cultures intertwined. His Armenian mother, Silva Ashotovna, and Chinese father, Yan Shi (Evgeniy Andreevich), were both physicists by education. The future technology leader lived in the capital of Armenia until 1985, absorbing the spirit of the city before heading to Moscow to enroll in the Department of General and Applied Physics at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT).

This fundamental education became the foundation for his future empire. In 1989, while still a fourth-year student at MIPT, David Yan, together with Alexander Moskalov, a researcher at the Institute for Problems of Microelectronics Technology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IPTM RAS), founded Bit Software. Nine years later, in 1998, it acquired its current, world-renowned name—ABBYY. Yan graduated from the institute in 1992 with a thesis on "DSL Dictionary Description Language," and in 2003, he earned a PhD in Physics and Mathematics with a dissertation on optical character recognition (OCR) technology.

Today, under the leadership of founder and board member David Yan, the ABBYY Group is an international corporation. Developing software in linguistics, data processing, and text recognition, the company has opened offices in the United States, Great Britain, Germany, Japan, and many other countries. For his achievements, the IT entrepreneur was awarded the Russian Government Prize in Science and Technology in 2001.

However, despite achieving global success, Yan never lost touch with his ancestral homeland. As an entrepreneur and co-investor, he is actively involved in the development of the Armenian ecosystem. One striking example of his contribution to the future of the nation was his participation as a founder in the creation of the prestigious Ayb educational foundation in Armenia.

The central theme of the master class at RAU was the philosophical and practical understanding of artificial intelligence. Drawing parallels between the capabilities of computers and human genius, the lecturer emphasized the fundamental difference between them.

According to David Yan, algorithms lack free will. No matter how technology develops, artificial intelligence is incapable of becoming Sergei Parajanov or Andrei Tarkovsky. The expert is convinced that the privilege of "becoming a wizard and waving a wand" remains a uniquely human ability. The creative act, based on identity, experience, and free choice, is beyond the reach of even the most sophisticated language models.

At the same time, the lecturer emphasizes the irreversibility of the ongoing changes. He compares the current technological revolution to the mastery of the fundamental laws of physics. According to the IT entrepreneur, this process is impossible to reverse—just as it is impossible to recycle nuclear energy back into uranium, abandon electricity, or undo the invention of the steam engine.

Assessing the scale of neural networks' influence on the modern world, Yan drew on the thought of another prominent figure in the Armenian Diaspora. "We must accept the fact: an alien brain has appeared on planet Earth," the speaker declared. "Noubar Afeyan, our compatriot and inventor of the Moderna vaccine, once said at a conference: 'AI is not Artificial Intelligence, AI is Alien Intelligence.' And I absolutely agree. Alien intelligence has indeed appeared on Earth, and it's inevitable."

Moving from philosophy to practical business, the PhD candidate in physics and mathematics shared his methodology for building successful projects with RAU students. The concept, dubbed "Three Magic Crystals," describes the essential intersection of three key competencies that a startup founder must possess:

The masterclass wasn't limited to theory. During the meeting, David Yan demonstrated the practical application of his ideas by creating and testing his own AI agent, Emily, in real time with RAU students. Remarkably, the generated neural network demonstrated the ability to communicate, including in Armenian, which resonated particularly well with the audience.

At the end of the event, attendees were given a glimpse into the daily life of a technological visionary. Students were shown footage of David Yang's AI-powered home in Silicon Valley. The futuristic space, with its moving walls and robotic dogs, provided a vivid illustration of the world that Armenians are already building at the forefront of global technology.
