Swiss President announces resignation

Swiss President Guy Parmellen announced during a press conference that he had informed his colleagues of his intention to leave the Federal Council at the end of 2026, adding that he had made the decision guided by the best interests of the country. Parmellen, who also holds the position of the country's economy minister, denied rumors that he was leaving his post due to health problems, insisting that he would not stay on for longer than his parliamentary mandate (which was scheduled for the fall of 2027). When asked about his successors, he noted that he would not interfere in the selection process.

Parmellen, a member of the right-wing Swiss People's Party, was included in the Swiss government back in 2016. He served as president of the country in 2021 and 2026. In Switzerland, the seven members of the Federal Council hold the office of president on a rotating basis for one-year terms.
