Nikol Pashinyan has become such a controversial figure that his appearances in Armenia and abroad often provoke strong negative reactions. In addition to expected meetings with foreign dignitaries at the UN, on September 23 in New York, Pashinyan decided to meet with a small group of Armenian-American students—members of the Pan-Armenian Student Association (ASA). In reality, this meeting falls under the purview of Zareh Sinanyan, the "Chief Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs of the Republic of Armenia," who was not invited to accompany the Prime Minister on his trip to the United States. Given Pashinyan's problematic stance on Armenian issues, the ASA board not only violated its organization's policy of remaining "apolitical" but also failed to inform or consult with the heads of the various ASA chapters in the United States about the meeting with the Prime Minister. The meeting with Pashinyan ultimately sowed discord among the members of the ASA. Tamara G. Nahapetyan, deputy director of the All-Armenian Student Association of the Eastern Region, objected to the meeting and resigned. She told me she wrote a lengthy statement titled "The 'Apolitical' All-Armenian Student Association Encroaches on Political Territory," expressing regret that Pashinyan had succeeded in destabilizing and dividing the non-partisan and apolitical Armenian group in the Diaspora. Another board member also resigned from the association's leadership. At least three ASA chapters issued statements distancing themselves from the organization's decision to meet with Pashinyan. While ASA members are free to express their personal political views, the association itself is an independent umbrella organization. To divide this group of young men and women who will become the future leaders of the Armenian-American community is to cause great harm. There is a far more serious problem than simply internal divisions within the ASA or Pashinyan's desire to achieve propaganda success among Armenians in the Diaspora. This is a continuation of the Armenian government's eight-year policy of alienating the diaspora, many of whom oppose Pashinyan's submissive stance and his numerous concessions to Armenia's enemies. It all began with
the abolition of the Ministry of Diaspora after Pashinyan came to power in 2018; this was followed by repeated statements refusing humanitarian aid from the diaspora; obstructing Armenian citizens returning to their homeland from exercising their right to vote on election day; complicating the process of obtaining Armenian citizenship for Armenians in the diaspora; encouraging non-Armenian immigration to Armenia in order to reduce the "monoethnic" nature of the country's population; questioning the facts of the Armenian Genocide; disregarding the historical significance of Mount Ararat and other sacred Armenian symbols; and the ceding of Artsakh to Azerbaijan, as well as parts of the Republic of Armenia. At previous meetings with Armenian communities in other countries, the prime minister demanded that those present hand over their mobile phones until the end of the event. Pashinyan then posted very brief excerpts from his speeches on his Facebook page, excluding any questions from guests. Participants were selected in advance to ensure no one raised controversial issues that could contradict the prime minister's position. Initially, ASA leaders asked students to submit their questions in writing in advance. Later, due to complaints, they decided to allow students to ask questions freely. After the meeting, ASA leadership issued a statement justifying the decision: "After listening to some feedback from the community, in hindsight, we realize that our internal communications could have been improved in the interest of transparency." The ASA statement has so far received 172 comments on the organization's Instagram page, mostly critical. There were numerous complaints that negative student comments were being deleted. Some called for the resignation of the ASA board. If Pashinyan truly intended to meet with American-Armenians in New York, why didn't he rent a large hall and allow hundreds of community members to listen to him, giving them the opportunity to ask questions and challenge his anti-Armenian policies? The Armenian government has a contradictory position regarding the diaspora's involvement in the life of the homeland. We are told that we have no right to comment on matters concerning the Republic of Armenia. Those who utter such nonsense forget that Armenia is the homeland of all Armenians, regardless of where they live. The real reason Armenians in the diaspora are told not to comment on matters related to Armenia is because Pashinyan's intolerant supporters dislike the diaspora's opposition views. I am certain that if a representative of the diaspora praised Pashinyan rather than criticized him, no one from Armenia would dare
say, "You have no right to comment." Furthermore, regardless of the nature of the comments, people everywhere have the right to express their opinions. Intolerance of any dissenting views violates the fundamental principles of democracy to which the Prime Minister proclaims his commitment. Pashinyan cannot take such an anti-diaspora stance and then invite ASA members to meet with him. Moreover, since Pashinyan repeatedly states that the Armenian government is fully capable of meeting the needs of its population and does not require any outside assistance, why does it organize the Hayastan All-Armenian Fund's annual fundraising events in dozens of countries? The Fund's board, headquartered in Armenia, is chaired by the President of the Republic of Armenia, followed by the Prime Minister and several other high-ranking officials. As Tamara G. Nahapetyan wrote in her complaint, "One cannot simultaneously dismiss the diaspora as irrelevant to Armenia's policies and simultaneously engage it as an audience for these policies." The students who spoke out against Pashinyan's anti-Armenian policies and rejected the ASA board members' decision to meet with him deserve praise. Translation from English – IC "ERKRAMAS"
