"The Church Is the Birthplace of the Armenian Soul"

I tried to explain that the Armenian Church is not only a religious affiliation for Armenians, but a sacred place of spiritual identity, national memory, and historical continuity.

“The Church is the Armenian Birthplace of My Soul”

On Sunday, September 27, at the invitation of the Primate of the Eastern Diocese of America, His Eminence Bishop Mesrop Barsamian, I attended the Divine Liturgy at St. Jacob Church in Evanston, Chicago. His Eminence Mesrop, who officiated, ordained two young Armenian-Americans as deacons during the Divine Liturgy. One of them was a fourth-generation child, and the other was a first-generation child. Both were gifted, prepared, and dedicated young men.

I was still thinking about the question a young Armenian woman had asked me at the reception the previous day. She had asked if it was possible to follow another religion or denomination, and why it was necessary for an Armenian to be part of the Armenian Apostolic Church. The question was simple, but profound. I tried to explain that for an Armenian, the Armenian Church is not just a denominational affiliation, but a sacred home of spiritual identity, national memory, and historical continuity.

As I watched the deacon ordination of these two young men, I remembered our generations who, having survived the Genocide, rebuilt their lives on foreign shores. They were deprived of their homeland and home, but they preserved their souls and faith. That is why they founded churches, not only as places of prayer, but also as a refuge for the national soul, a repository of memory, and a cradle of heritage. And thanks to these churches, it was possible to keep the Armenian spirit alive for generations, in its spiritual and national integrity.

“The spirit is more than the body.” My late father, who survived the Genocide, often said: “First, the health of the soul, then the body.” This saying was the guide of his life. He lived with that conviction and peacefully ended his earthly life, passing into eternity with faith.

Yes, the generation that survived the Genocide was able to survive in the Diaspora because it remained faithful to its roots, its Armenian spirit, and its spiritual heritage. The Armenian Church became the sacred cradle where new generations were formed with an awakened spiritual and national consciousness. It became the strong bridge that connected the past to the future and passed on the national heritage from generation to generation.

Those generations, while preserving their Armenian identity, simultaneously became worthy and devoted citizens of the countries they adopted.

Therefore, these two young men being ordained are living testimony to that sacred mission of the Armenian Church. In them, the spiritual process of our people continues, and in their service, our collective faith and hope are renewed.

And the famous words of the great poet Vahan Tekeyan dedicated to the Armenian Church came to mind: “The Church is the Armenian birthplace of my soul.” Indeed, in that one line, the history, memory, loss and rebirth of our people are summed up. Because the Armenian Church is not just a place of prayer, but the sacred place where the Armenian soul is born, strengthened and continues its path.
