More than 70% of Swiss residents voted against a referendum that would have enshrined permanent and comprehensive neutrality in the constitution.

Swiss voters reject proposal to impose stricter form of neutrality in referendum

More than 70% of Swiss voters rejected a referendum that would have enshrined permanent and comprehensive neutrality in the constitution, as well as limiting the country's ability to impose economic sanctions and cooperate with NATO, Reuters reported.

According to the final results published on the government's website, 70.15% of voters voted against the initiative, while 29.85% voted for it. The turnout was 47.06%.

"This result is not a vote against neutrality. Switzerland was neutral yesterday, it is neutral today and it will remain neutral in the future," Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis said at a press conference after the referendum results.

According to Cassis, the rejection of the initiative allows Switzerland to continue to make decisions on economic sanctions on a case-by-case basis. At the same time, the country can cooperate with other states and partners if this cooperation strengthens Switzerland's security.

The minister emphasized that Switzerland's security also depends on the security of neighboring countries and the entire European continent.

Switzerland's neutrality has been recognized internationally since 1815. However, the Constitution does not provide clear rules for the implementation of the neutrality policy by the country's government.
