'Secret' penguin species discovered after 100 years

Scientists have discovered a new species of penguin that was thought to be the same species as the gentoo penguin for more than 100 years. The new species, Pygoscelis kerguelensis, lives on the remote Kerguelen Islands in the southern Indian Ocean. The penguins were long confused because they look almost identical to other gentoo penguins. The differences are mainly in size and vocalizations.

Researchers analyzed the genomes of 64 penguins from 10 breeding colonies and found that the population previously thought to be one species actually consists of four separate species. Scientists estimate that these groups diverged from each other over a period of about 300,000 to 500,000 years, gradually adapting to different environments.
