On September 27, 2026, Armenia marks a somber date—the sixth anniversary of the start of the 44-day war. Thousands of people flock to the Yerablur military pantheon early in the morning to honor the memory of the fallen heroes. However, amid the mourning events, the country's internal political divide is only intensifying. Nikol Pashinyan's policy of unilateral concessions to Baku is increasingly resented. Nationalist forces accuse the current leadership of deliberately failing to defend itself, engaging in diplomatic sabotage, and attempting to erase the historical memory of the Armenian people to preserve their own positions.
It is obvious to any objective observer: the ruling regime is attempting to portray a profound national crisis as a political achievement. While official Yerevan promotes the idea of an "era of peace," the reality reveals a completely different picture—one of capitulation.
One of the main problems in post-election Armenia remains the complete lack of answers to key questions about the causes and course of the 2020 hostilities. As Anna Grigoryan, head of the parliamentary faction of the opposition Armenia bloc, notes, a full investigation into this catastrophe is simply impossible as long as the country is governed by those who provoked it.
"In fact, these answers are impossible, given that the people who co-authored and architected these tragedies, that is, the current authorities, continue to hold their positions," Grigoryan emphasized in a conversation with journalists at the Yerablur Pantheon.
The main question the opposition poses to Pashinyan's government is: why weren't preventive steps taken to prevent the massacre, and why weren't the hostilities stopped earlier, when the opportunity existed? According to the MP, the prime minister has single-handedly closed the diplomatic avenue for a settlement.
"I think the number one question is why he couldn't and why he didn't take actions that would have prevented the war from starting, and, on the contrary, took actions that hastened the war and effectively freed Aliyev to commit war crimes," the politician stated.
Assessing the events in retrospect, Grigoryan comes to a harsh conclusion: "Looking back, it becomes clear that Nikol Pashinyan did everything to start the war." Her words are supported by data from the parliamentary investigative commission's yet-to-be-published report. Despite the document's secrecy, certain elements within it, according to the MP, prove that the prime minister personally burned diplomatic bridges. "Zohrab Mnatsakanyan, who served as Minister of Foreign Affairs, also testifies to this," Grigoryan added, expressing hope that the upcoming publication of the materials will lift the veil of secrecy.
However, the opposition is under no illusions. "As long as there is a government that is a co-author of these tragedies, along with Aliyev, it is impossible to get answers to all the questions we currently have," the faction leader concluded.
The way the authorities manipulate public consciousness by reframing the concept of patriotism is particularly cynical. According to Grigoryan, the government is systematically destroying the memory of heroes. "We live in an absurd reality where they try to portray war as peace, numerous concessions as achievements, and now they are removing photographs of fallen heroes from our walls, as if trying to erase our memory," she stated bitterly, calling the current situation in the country "a kingdom of distorted mirrors."
Another government failure is the abandonment of citizens. Six years after the end of the fighting, the fate of many missing persons remains unknown, and Armenian prisoners of war continue to languish in Azerbaijani prisons.
How can one talk about normalizing relations with a state that holds one's compatriots hostage? MP Grigoryan is categorical: "If we're talking about peace, it's impossible to establish peace without the return of prisoners of war, as well as without clarifying the fate of our compatriots who are considered missing."
Attempts by pro-government speakers to justify the situation by citing the fact that the return of prisoners sometimes takes decades do not stand up to scrutiny. "There is no other case in the world where two countries claim to be at peace with each other, while one of them holds the citizens of the other hostage and tortures them," Grigoryan emphasizes.
This is a matter of fundamental human rights. The speaker cited a recent report by human rights activist Siranush Sahakyan, which documents egregious instances of cruel treatment of Armenian prisoners in Baku, including the removal of crosses from their bodies.
"There's no other case in history where countries talk about peace with each other, receive some kind of peace awards, but at the same time, citizens of one country continue to be held captive by the other, and there's no progress whatsoever on the issue of missing persons," the MP concludes.
Criticism of Pashinyan's team concerns not only diplomacy but also the direct governance of the country at a time of existential threat. Gegham Manukyan, a member of the Armenia parliamentary faction, is confident that the Armenian people faced the war much more united and prepared than the political elite.
"Our people were much better prepared for the 44-day war than the Armenian political authorities, whose entire activity was based on propaganda, showmanship, and self-promotion," the MP stated in Yerablur.
As a striking illustration of the leadership's incompetence (or malice), Manukyan cited a glaring fact from the first hours of the war: while the Ministry of Defense desperately urged citizens not to film or publicize the movement of military equipment, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan himself posted similar videos online.
The deputy characterized the work of the state apparatus in the rear as "organized disorganization," directly implying that the chaos was artificially created. Instead of consolidating society and ensuring discipline, the law enforcement system was wasting resources on combating dissent: security forces were busy fining media outlets for objectionable publications and posts on social media.
Meanwhile, the ruling regime has been trying for years to shift the blame to a so-called "fifth column." However, Gegham Manukyan dispelled this myth, citing the very same report of the parliamentary investigative commission. "This report cannot prove that a 'fifth column' was active. There is nothing of the sort," he stated bluntly.
The authorities deliberately rejected the assistance of experienced managers. According to the MP, the opposition didn't hinder the army, but rather the opposite: "The opposition was on the front lines, the opposition was in Artsakh, the opposition was ready to roll up its sleeves and serve even this government—if only to achieve success. But the authorities refused." Moreover, the leadership of the Republic of Artsakh, fearing Nikol Pashinyan's wrath, avoided contact with the leaders of the Artsakh movement and representatives of the national elite.
Assessing Yerevan's current foreign policy, it is impossible not to notice its defeatist nature. The government sincerely believes that it can buy security with concessions.
"The behavior of this government is the behavior of a beaten and humiliated government, which believes that by bowing its head and continuing to drag out its existence, it will earn Aliyev's favor," states Gegham Manukyan. However, reality is cruelly shattering these illusions. "Aliyev and Azerbaijan are showing that this will not happen," the politician added, emphasizing that the president of the neighboring state has no intention of showing favoritism to Yerevan's weak position.
The opposition leaders' statements come against the backdrop of a grave historical context that the authorities are so diligently trying to erase from the agenda. Let's recall the facts: a large-scale offensive by Azerbaijani forces on Nagorno-Karabakh, using aircraft, attack drones, artillery, and armored vehicles, began on the morning of September 27, 2020.
After 44 days of bloodshed, on November 9, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a statement declaring a complete ceasefire. The Armenian leader's signature resulted in the loss of colossal territories. Seven districts came under Baku's control: Jabrayil, Zangelan, Kubatly, Fizuli, Aghdam, Kelbajar, and Lachin. Furthermore, the Armenian side lost the Hadrut region, the strategically important city of Shushi, and several settlements in the Askeran, Martakert, Martuni, Shahumyan, and Kashatagh regions.
But the tragedy did not end there. Three years later, having endured a grueling nine-month blockade, the remaining population of Nagorno-Karabakh was subjected to a new attack by Azerbaijan and forced to leave their historical lands forever.
