Hambardzumyan is a FIDE Master and part of a young generation that has been achieving good results in international competitions. The Armenian Chess Federation currently rates him at 2398 in classical games and 2374 in blitz.

The victory took place in Titled Tuesday, Chess.com's traditional weekly tournament for titled players. It is played using the Swiss system over 11 rounds and regularly attracts some of the best chess players in the world. Carlsen is also one of the players with the most wins in the tournament's history.

The result drew attention due to the age difference and the varying levels of experience between the two players. Carlsen, 35, remains at the top of the world rankings and is a five-time classical chess world champion.

In 2025, he also received special recognition from the Armenian Chess Federation for that European result. His personal coach is Grandmaster Tigran Harutyunyan, who was honored at the same ceremony along with other key figures in Armenian youth chess development.

The game against Carlsen was played in blitz format, an important detail for properly understanding the result. It wasn't a classical game, but neither is it a secondary format for the Norwegian, who regularly competes in blitz and rapid chess and remains one of the world's leading players in those formats as well.
