Gagik Harutyunyan's photographs have become a "universal language" about Armenia for international professionals in the field.

“Since in 2026 the Republic of Armenia celebrates its 35th anniversary, at the same time it turns out that in 2026 it is also the 200th anniversary of photography, and these 2 important anniversaries coincided with the 80th anniversary of Gagik Harutyunyan, one of the founders of Armenian artistic photography, the Contemporary Art Center under the Yerevan Municipality initiated the first international conference on artistic photography in Armenia and the region.

«Քանի որ 2026թ. Հայաստանի Հանրապետությունը տոնում է իր 35-ամյակը, միևնույն ժամանակ պարզվում է, որ 2026 թվականին նաև լուսանկարչության 200-ամյակն է, և այդ 2 կարևոր հոբելյանները զուգադիպել են հայ գեղարվեստական լուսանկարչության հիմնադիրներից Գագիկ Հարությունյանի 80-ամյա հոբելյանի հետ, Երևանի քաղաքապետարանի ենթակայությամբ գործող արդի արվեստի կենտրոնը նախաձեռնեց Հայաստանում և տարածաշրջանում գեղարվեստական լուսանկարչության առաջին միջազգային համաժողով։

Since the title of the conference is “Wheels of Photography”, we have tried to include in the name all the problems, challenges, and fundamentals that exist in the field of photography. The peculiarity of the conference is that after years, within the framework of the 200th anniversary of photography, we have pursued the intersection of the paths of popularization and internationalization of Armenian artistic photography. And the best way to do this is an international conference, within the framework of which we have invited to Armenia the directors and curators of the best photography museums of 20 European countries, including the USA, Australia, and Canada,” said Sona Harutyunyan, Acting Director of the “HayArt” Center for Contemporary Art, Founder of the “Yerevan International Biennale of Artistic Printing,” and Founding President of the “Cultural Dialogue” organization, in an interview with Aravot.am.

Քանի որ համաժողովի խորագիրն է «Լուսանկարչության հեծանները», փորձել ենք անվանման մեջ ներառել բոլոր այն խնդիրները, մարտահրավերները, հիմնադրույթները, որոնք գոյություն ունեն լուսանկարչության ոլորտում։ Համաժողովի առանձնահատկությունն այն է, որ տարիներ անց լուսանկարչության 200-ամյակի շրջանակում հետամուտ ենք եղել հայ գեղարվեստական լուսանկարչության հանրահռչակման և միջազգայնացման ճանապարհների հատմանը։ Իսկ դրա լավագույն միջոցը միջազգային համաժողովն է, որի շրջանակում Հայաստան ենք հրավիրել եվրոպական 20 երկրների՝ այդ թվում ԱՄՆ-ի, Ավստրալիայի, Կանադայի լուսանկարչական լավագույն թանգարանների տնօրեններին, համադրողներին»,- Aravot.am-ի հետ զրույցում նշեց «ՀայԱրտ» արդի արվեստի կենտրոնի տնօրենի ժամանակավոր պաշտոնակատար, «Գեղարվեստական տպագրության երևանյան միջազգային բիենալեի» հիմնադիր, «Մշակութային երկխոսություն» կազմակերպության հիմնադիր նախագահ Սոնա Հարությունյանը։

“The “Photo Elysee” Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, occupies the first place in the field of photography, and the director of that museum, art critic, photography historian, and exhibition curator Natalie Hershdorfer is arriving in Armenia for the first time thanks to this conference, that is, we are discovering Armenia for many people thanks to and through such an international conference. People in this field come to Armenia and present their institutions, and 14 speakers are also present at the conference from the Armenian side. One of the most important features is that through the conference we are trying to create institutional cooperation between institutions,” added Sona Harutyunyan.

«Շվեյցարիայի Լոզան քաղաքի «Ֆոտո Էլիզե» թանգարանը զբաղեցնում է առաջին հորիզոնականը լուսանկարչության ոլորտում, եւ այդ թանգարանի տնօրեն, արվեստաբան, լուսանկարչության պատմաբան և ցուցահանդեսների համադրող Նատալի Հերշդորֆերը այս համաժողովի շնորհիվ առաջին անգամ ժամանում է Հայաստան, այսինքն՝ մենք նման միջազգային համաժողովի շնորհիվ և միջոցով շատ մարդկանց համար բացահայտում ենք Հայաստանը։ Տվյալ ոլորտի մարդիկ գալիս են Հայաստան և իրենց կառույցներն են ներկայացնում, նաև 14 բանախոս հայկական կողմից է ներկա համաժողովին։ Կարևորագույն առանձնահատկություններից մեկն էլ այն է, որ համաժողովի միջոցով փորձում ենք ինստիտուցիոնալ համագործակցություն ստեղծել կառույցների միջև»,- հավելեց Սոնա Հարությունյանը։

“If the first retrospective exhibition in 2017 was held during Gagik Harutyunyan’s lifetime in order to popularize Gagik Harutyunyan’s path in artistic photography, then almost 10 years later this exhibition is already a posthumous retrospective exhibition, which is being held with the aim of internationalizing Gagik Harutyunyan’s art. And that internationalization is possible through this international conference, which is being held within the framework of Gagik Harutyunyan’s 80th anniversary.

«Եթե 2017թ. առաջին հետահայաց ցուցահանդեսը Գագիկ Հարությունյանի կյանքի օրոք իրականացվեց, որպեսզի հանրահռչակվի Գագիկ Հարությունյանի գեղարվեստական լուսանկարչության ուղին, ապա գրեթե 10 տարի անց այս ցուցահանդեսը արդեն իսկ հետմահու հետահայաց ցուցահանդես է, որն իրականացվում է Գագիկ Հարությունյանի արվեստի միջազգայնացման նպատակով։ Իսկ այդ միջազգայնացումը հնարավոր է այս միջազգային համաժողովի միջոցով, որն իրականացվում է Գագիկ Հարությունյանի 80-ամյա հոբելյանի շրջանակում։

Representatives of all those institutions, curators, and museum directors who have been in Yerevan for several days are discovering Gagik Harutyunyan for themselves, and almost every second person asks whether Gagik Harutyunyan is an Armenian photographer. Before that, they did not imagine that there was such a quality of artistic photography and such a representative in Armenia.

Բոլոր այն կառույցների ներկայացուցիչները, համադրողները, թանգարանների տնօրենները, որոնք արդեն քանի օր է՝ Երևանում են, իրենց համար բացահայտում են Գագիկ Հարությունյանին, և գրեթե յուրաքանչյուրի երկրորդի կողմից հարց է հնչում՝ արդյոք Գագիկ Հարությունյանը հայ լուսանկարիչ է։ Մինչ այդ, իրենք չէին պատկերացնում, որ Հայաստանում կա նման որակի գեղարվեստական լուսանկարչություն և նման ներկայացուցիչ։

Gagik Harutyunyan has documented the different stages of the formation of the Republic of Armenia, the land, the people, the rural life, all of this is a panorama through which our guests discover Armenia through artistic photography. We were thinking of organizing tours for them, but in the photographs in the exhibition they appear in Goris, Aparan, get acquainted with historical and cultural monuments… In other words, Gagik Harutyunyan’s photography is the universal medium, he is the author himself, thanks to which Armenian and international speakers have the opportunity to create a picture of Armenia,” our interlocutor detailed.

Գագիկ Հարությունյանը վավերացրել է Հայաստանի Հանրապետության կայացման տարբեր փուլերը, հողը, մարդկանց, գյուղական կյանքը, այս ամբողջը մի համայնապատկեր է, որի միջոցով մեր հյուրերը բացահայտում են Հայաստանը գեղարվեստական լուսանկարչության միջոցով։ Մենք մտածում էինք իրենց համար կազմակերպել շրջայցեր, բայց ցուցահանդեսում առկա լուսանկարներում իրենք հայտնվում են Գորիսում, Ապարանում, պատմամշակութային հուշարձաններին են ծանոթանում… Այսինքն՝ Գագիկ Հարությունյանի լուսանկարչությունն այն ունիվերսալ միջոցն է, ինքն այն հեղինակն է, որի շնորհիվ հայ և միջազգային բանախոսները հնարավորություն են ունենում Հայաստանի պատկերը կազմել»,-մանրամասնեց մեր զրուցակիցը։

According to Sona Harutyunyan, the most important messages of the conference are the popularization of Armenian artistic photography, the internationalization of Gagik Harutyunyan as the founder of Armenian artistic photography, the goal of outlining and consolidating Armenia as an international platform in the field of photography in the region.

Սոնա Հարությունյանի խոսքով, համաժողովի ամենակարևոր ուղերձներն են՝ հայ գեղարվեստական լուսանկարչության հանրահռչակումը, Գագիկ Հարությունյանի՝ որպես հայ գեղարվեստական լուսանկարչության հիմնադրի, իր արվեստի միջազգայնացումը, տարածաշրջանում Հայաստանը որպես լուսանկարչության ոլորտի միջազգային հարթակ նախանշելու և ամրակայելու նպատակը:

It was also noted that through the conference, they will try to uncover all the challenges that artificial intelligence creates for the field of photography: what is the threat to photography, what challenges are being thrown at the field of photography by artificial intelligence, and whether analog photography can withstand these challenges today.

Նշվեց նաեւ, որ համաժողովի միջոցով փորձելու են վեր հանել բոլոր մարտահրավերները, որոնք ստեղծում է արհեստական բանականությունը լուսանկարչության ոլորտի համար՝ ինչով է վտանգված լուսանկարչությունը, ինչպիսի մարտահրավերներ են նետվում լուսանկարչության ոլորտին արհեստական բանականության կողմից, եւ արդյոք այսօր անալոգային լուսանկարչությունը կարող է դիմակայել այդ մարտահրավերներին։
