The European Commission has decided to unfreeze €4.2 billion in cohesion funds for Hungary, assessing that Budapest has met EU requirements on the rule of law. Euronews reports.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that Hungary had taken important steps to strengthen the rule of law and protect the EU's financial interests.
In addition, the decision allows Hungary to fully participate again in the Erasmus+ student exchange program and the Horizon Europe research program.
The EU had frozen part of Hungary's funding in 2022 due to systemic problems in the fight against corruption, conflicts of interest and public procurement. At that time, a total of €6.3 billion in cohesion funding was frozen.
Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar’s government announced in late August that it had met all EU conditions, including the settlement of issues related to public interest funds, or KEKVAs.
At the same time, Hungary wants to receive another €10 billion from recovery funds, which the European Commission is still assessing. Another €2 billion in consolidation funding remains frozen due to concerns about the asylum system, child protection law and academic freedom.
