"We are victims of terrorism": Pezeshkian's statement from the UN podium

Iranian President Masoud Pezizkian is addressing the United Nations General Assembly for the first time since the US and Israel began a conflict against the country.

His speech comes a day after US President Donald Trump's speech to the UN General Assembly, during which he declared that he could "destroy the Islamic Republic."

"We are victims of terrorism": Pezeshkian's statement from the UN podium

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is addressing the United Nations General Assembly for the first time since the US and Israel launched a war against the country. His speech comes a day after US President Donald Trump declared at the UN General Assembly that he could “destroy the Islamic Republic.”

“Yesterday, the president of the United States called us terrorists. We are victims of terrorism,” Pezeshkian told the audience.

Holding up a portrait of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a US-Israeli airstrike early in the war, he said: “I come from an Iran where our respected supreme leader was killed without any legal basis or reason.”

He also referred to the bombing of a school in the early days of the attacks on Iran, again holding up various images that he said showed “innocent children who had committed no crime.”

There was only one representative from the US delegation in the hall during the speech. He left the hall when Pezeshkian accused the US and Israel of being “terrorists”, training terrorists and protecting them, presenting Iran as a target for such actions.

“We only defended ourselves, we are not terrorists. Our innocent people have become the target of cowardly attacks and aggression against our country. And we defended ourselves with maximum force,” the Iranian president added.

Pezeshkian said that the Iranian people “remained unscathed” in the face of the attacks, insisting that Iran had retaliated but had not targeted “the civilian population.” He accused those attacking Iran of “targeting the country’s schools, universities, health centers, hospitals, infrastructure, and all of this in violation of international law.”

The Iranian president also stated that “for the past seven months, the people have been on the streets every night, demonstrating in defense of their land, their homeland.” He did not mention the violent suppression of large public protests by Iranian authorities in the weeks leading up to the attacks on the country.

Pezeshkian said his country seeks to develop nuclear technology “for progress, not to threaten societies with weapons.”

“And we want to cooperate and work together to ensure security. We seek energy development for progress. However, for our country, peaceful nuclear technology is part of our natural development,” Pezeshkian said, noting the need for progress in areas such as agriculture and “electricity supply.”

“Iran does not accept that nuclear technology should be exclusively at the disposal of a few, a small number of countries. We will not accept that. We will not bow down and we will not give up the right that originally belonged to us. We say it clearly: no to nuclear weapons and no restrictions on peaceful nuclear technologies. Our peace will not be established on the battlefield, but they must provide the necessary security for the Iranian people and the country,” he said.

Pezeshkian also stated that Iran’s defense systems are necessary to protect the country from attacks.

“Iran must be strong to avoid threats and threats to its future. Our defense systems are designed in such a way that no one can think that the bombing of Iranian cities will go unanswered. That is why we have the military power that is necessary for defense,” he said.
