Erdogan calls for abolishing veto power of permanent members of UN Security Council

Anadolu Agency reports that Erdogan presented these proposals in an article for Bloomberg.

According to the Turkish President, the current structure of the UN Security Council continues to reflect the world order formed after World War II and no longer fully corresponds to modern realities.

Թուրքիայի նախագահի գնահատմամբ՝ ՄԱԿ-ի Անվտանգության խորհրդի ներկայիս կառուցվածքը շարունակում է արտացոլել Երկրորդ համաշխարհային պատերազմից հետո ձևավորված աշխարհակարգը և այլևս ամբողջությամբ չի համապատասխանում ժամանակակից իրողություններին։

Erdogan noted that pandemics, energy crises, disruptions in supply chains and regional conflicts have shown that making the solution of global problems dependent on the decisions of a few states does not meet the requirements of the current international system.

Էրդողանը նշել է, որ համավարակները, էներգետիկ ճգնաժամերը, մատակարարման շղթաների խաթարումները և տարածաշրջանային հակամարտությունները ցույց են տվել, որ համաշխարհային խնդիրների լուծումը մի քանի պետությունների որոշումներից կախված դարձնելը չի համապատասխանում ներկայիս միջազգային համակարգի պահանջներին։

According to him, the abolition of the veto power should be at the heart of UN reforms. Erdogan insisted that adding new permanent members to the Security Council will not solve the problem of concentrating decision-making powers in the hands of a limited number of states.

The Turkish president has proposed the formation of a Security Council that will not have permanent members.

Թուրքիայի նախագահն առաջարկել է ձևավորել Անվտանգության խորհուրդ, որը մշտական անդամներ չի ունենա։

According to his proposal, the members of the council should be elected for a certain term by the UN General Assembly, and states wishing to be re-elected should again receive the support of a majority of member states.

Նրա առաջարկի համաձայն՝ խորհրդի անդամները որոշակի ժամկետով պետք է ընտրվեն ՄԱԿ-ի Գլխավոր ասամբլեայի կողմից, իսկ կրկին ընտրվել ցանկացող պետությունները պետք է վերստին ստանան անդամ երկրների մեծամասնության աջակցությունը։

Erdogan also spoke in favor of expanding the powers of the General Assembly and increasing the accountability of the Security Council to it.

Էրդողանը նաև հանդես է եկել Գլխավոր ասամբլեայի լիազորությունների ընդլայնման և Անվտանգության խորհրդի՝ դրա առջև հաշվետվողականության բարձրացման օգտին։

“We cannot build the international order of the future by preserving the hierarchies of the past,” the Turkish president said.

Erdogan also touched on the changing balance of power in the world, noting the growing economic weight of Asia, the demand for a wider representation of Africa and the increasing role of developing countries.

According to him, the right of developing countries to develop and access to the necessary financial resources must be guaranteed.

The Turkish president announced that Ankara will continue to support the abolition of the veto right, the increase in the role of elected members of the Security Council and the strengthening of the position of the UN General Assembly.

According to Erdogan, to create a "more just world," it is necessary to unite the experience, potential, and political will of different regions on a common platform.
