US plans to establish two military bases in Greenland

The two are Narsarsuaq in the south and Mestersvig in the east. Narsarsuaq was previously home to the U.S. military base Blue West One, which was closed in the 1950s. Since then, the population of the settlement has dwindled to a few dozen.

The new agreement between the United States, Denmark and Greenland is scheduled to be signed on Tuesday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. The full text of the agreement has not yet been made public, and sources familiar with the situation say some of its details will be finalized at the time of signing.

The White House declined to comment on the details of the agreement, repeating an earlier statement that it would contribute to the security of Greenland and the United States.
