US urges Czech Republic to meet NATO defense spending commitments

The Czech Republic is still not meeting NATO’s mandatory defense spending requirements. Interfax reports that Matthew Whitaker, the U.S. permanent representative to NATO, said this at the Prague Defense Summit.

“It is sad to see that the Czech Republic has not made significant progress in meeting its defense commitments, which were adopted at the 2025 NATO summit in The Hague…. Unfortunately, the Czech Republic is striving to be among the last in the alliance when it comes to defense spending. It must be committed to its defense spending goals,” the U.S. representative said.

According to Whitaker, he personally conveyed the corresponding message to the Czech leadership.

The permanent representative assured that the United States remains committed to protecting the territory of NATO countries, but noted that allies in the alliance should also increase their efforts.

NATO had previously set a new target for the period up to 2035: to allocate 3.5% of GDP annually to defense, as well as 1.5% to defense-related infrastructure.

However, the government of Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis has reduced military spending for the current year to 1.7%-1.8% of GDP, and intends to use 2% of GDP in the future. Babis stressed that the funds should be spent on infrastructure and healthcare, while limited funds remain for defense.
