UN mission finds grounds to believe US committed war crimes in Iran

The UN Fact-Finding Mission on Iran said on September 17 that it has reasonable grounds to believe that the United States was behind two military strikes on a school and a sports facility in Iran in February and that they amounted to war crimes. Reuters reports.

A new report by the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran, to be presented to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, examines US actions during the war against Iran that began in February.

The UN experts said they found reasonable grounds to believe that US forces were responsible for the attack on an elementary school in the city of Minab. According to Iranian officials, the attack killed more than 150 people, including about 120 schoolchildren.

The mission concluded that the attack was unprovoked and indiscriminate, resulting in civilian casualties and damage to civilian infrastructure, which is a war crime under international law.

According to the report, the US relied on information that a senior Iranian military commander was at the site, but failed to properly verify that information before carrying out the strike. The investigators said that the failure to update the intelligence on the targeting and the lack of confirmation that the building was not a military target was simply beyond negligence.

“The US targeted the school building with the knowledge of the significant risk of hitting a civilian target and acted accordingly,” the report said.

In June, US President Donald Trump said that “no one deliberately attacked” the girls’ school in Iran in February.
