Syrian-Armenian businessman donates 1491 manuscript to Yerevan's Matenadaran

The Matenadaran’s statement states that the aforementioned manuscript was discovered during a visit by a delegation led by the director of the Vienna Matenadaran.

Մատենադարանի տարածած հաղորդագրության մեջ նշվում է, որ վերոնշյալ ձեռագիրը բացահայտվել էր Վիեննա Մատենադարանի տնօրենի գլխավորած պատվիրակության այցի շրջանակում։

The new manuscript is a khaza-written Sharaknots, which was written in the village of Am in Baghesh (writer: priest Hovhannes). To date, the village of Am has been mentioned only once in manuscript sources, without a clear location. Here, in 1497, Hovhannes’s scribe again copied a Gospel, which is also kept in the Matenadaran.

Նոր ձեռագրական միավորը խազագրյալ Շարակնոց է, որը գրչագրվել է Բաղեշի Ամ գյուղում (գրիչ՝ Հովհաննես քահանա)։ Մինչ օրս ձեռագրական աղբյուրներում Ամ գյուղը հիշատակվել է ընդամենը մեկ անգամ՝ առանց հստակ տեղորոշման։ Այստեղ 1497 թվականին կրկին Հովհաննես գրիչն ընդօրինակել է մի Ավետարան, որը ևս պահվում է Մատենադարանում։

“This new manuscript presented to the Matenadaran is, in fact, not only the earliest known example created by the same pen in the same village, but also the only one in which the penman Hovhannes precisely locates the village of Am in the Baghesh province in the main inscription.

«Մատենադարանին ընծայված այս նոր մատյանը, փաստորեն, ոչ միայն նույն գյուղում միևնույն գրչի ստեղծած՝ մեզ հայտնի ամենավաղ նմուշն է, այլև միակը, որի գլխավոր հիշատակարանում Հովհաննես գրիչը ստույգ տեղորոշում է Ամ գյուղը՝ Բաղեշ գավառում։

The Matenadaran expresses its gratitude to Gabriel Chemberjian for his valuable donation and contribution to the replenishment of the manuscript heritage,” the institution said in a statement.
